Date Updates: Aronofsky's 'Noah' Lands 2014, 'Carrie' Remake in 2013

Russell Crowe / Noah

Briefly: Two upcoming projects now have official release dates. First, it was reported (via ComingSoon) that Kimberly Peirce's remake of Stephen King's Carrie, which is set to star Chloe Moretz (news of her casting here), has already been given a March 15th, 2013 release date by MGM. That means we'll be seeing that horror film in less than a year. But the one I think everyone is much more excited about won't be arriving for another two years. THR confirms that Paramount has officially set Darren Aronofsky's next film Noah, with Russell Crowe as Noah, for March 28th, 2014. Two years out, and already one of my most anticipated. ›››

New Dates: 'Ender's Game' Moves to November, 'Maleficent' in 2014

Utility Deck G

A few release date updates to highlight. First up, Summit Ent. has pushed the original March 2013 release of Gavin Hood's Ender's Game adaptation to November (via The Wrap). The sci-fi adaptation, starring Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford, is now set to open November 1st, 2013. One of the big changes that has affected scheduling is Summit being bought by Lionsgate. In other updates, Disney has now officially scheduled their Maleficent movie, about the Sleeping Beauty evil fairy's origin story starring Angelina Jolie, for March 14th, 2014. Plus, Paramount has shifted the release of The Dictator by just a few days. ›››

Disney Announces 'Captain America' Sequel for Release in April 2014

The Avengers - Captain America

Yesterday we got some sweet illustrated wallpapers for The Avengers, complete with Captain America swinging his shield around like a boss. We won't see him fighting in the contemporary world until the film hits the big screen on May 4th next month, but now we have official word that the sequel will see Cap's continued adventures in a modern day setting. A press release (along with the photo above which you can see in full below) was sent our way along with news that Disney will release the still untitled sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger, on April 4th, 2014. Sounds like we'll start summer early that year. ›››

The Weinsteins Now Releasing the 'Bully' Doc Unrated This Weekend

Bully / Harvey Weinstein

So this is how Harvey plans to get back the MPAA, to release it unrated. After a recent plea to the MPAA by Bully teen Alex Libby and The Weinstein Company (TWC) Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein failed – by one vote – to get the film its deserved PG-13 rating, TWC is choosing to move forward with releasing the film unrated by the MPAA on March 30. The Weinstein Company has officially announced that Lee Hirsch & Alicia Dwyer's documentary Bully will be released in limited New York & Los Angeles theaters starting this weekend, March 30th. If you've been curious to see this, now is the time to go see it - unrated - in theaters! ›››

Universal Pulls Joe Kosinski's Sci-Fi 'Oblivion' to April 2013 from July

Tom Cruise in Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion

Briefly: Interesting date change to report on, via Deadline. Universal Pictures has rescheduled the original release date for Joseph Kosinski's (Tron Legacy) new sci-fi movie, titled Oblivion or Horizons, that's set to star Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko and Morgan Freeman, from July to April 26th, 2013. While next summer was already starting to look crowded, I was nervous about how big of an impact this sci-fi, supposedly set on another barren planet, would have in July, opening near that coveted "Batman" weekend. But now they've backed off setting it to open as one of the early-summer starters, the weekend just before May. Interesting choice. I'm very excited to see what Kosinski's second epic sci-fi outing looks like, bring it.

Paramount Reschedules 'World War Z' from December to June 2013

World War Z

Briefly: A release update that will upset fans waiting for the zombie apocalypse. Paramount has recently set new release dates (via Collider) for a few upcoming films, and have bumped Marc Forster's World War Z adaptation, starring Brad Pitt, from December of this year all the way to June 21st, 2013. Looks like they're saving it for the summer and giving it time, plenty of time, to finish up. We buzzed about the highly anticipated adaptation of Max Brooks' zombie book being set for this year, but looks like we'll have to wait another six months. Chris McQuarrie's One Shot movie with Tom Cruise was put in its old December 21st, 2012 slot, and Paramount also scheduled Jonathan Liebesman's TMNT movie for Christmas Day in 2013.

Fox Searchlight Sets 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' to Open Late June

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Briefly: Word from the internets, rather from the updates of @boxofficemojo (found via SlashFilm), is that Fox Searchlight has just set a late June 29th release date for the release of Benh Zeitlin's Beasts of the Southern Wild, the highly praised, award winning, universally loved Sundance sensation. The film stars lovable newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis as Hushpuppy, a six year-old girl striving to survive with her dad in the "the Bathtub," a community at the southern edge of Louisiana. I loved it (my Sundance review) and it won the Grand Jury prize. I don't think this is the best date to let this wonderful film explode, since it is a hard sell, but we can only hope they're getting ready to go all out with it. They've got my full support for it!

James Mangold's 'The Wolverine' Now Set for Late July 2013 Opening

The Wolverine

Briefly: 20th Century Fox has apparently set a release date for The Wolverine, the back-to-life Wolverine spin-off, with James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight and Day) now set to direct. It will hit theaters July 26th, 2013, same weekend as the Dirty Dancing remake, and a week after Joseph Kosinski's Horizons. The update comes from Box Office Mojo (via SlashFilm) and means that Fox is moving forward with this, finally getting things set to start up this summer with Mangold at the helm, since its been a bit off after Darren Aronofsky left. Hugh Jackman is set to star in the story about Logan's adventures in Japan.

'The Grey' May Come Back to Theaters in October for an Oscar Run

The Grey

While it's a bit odd to be talking about a re-release nine months away days before the movie is even released in theaters to begin with, I don't mind, because this is exactly what I wanted to hear. Joe Carnahan's The Grey arrives in theaters this weekend, and it's easily one of the best films of the first half of this year, I've seen it twice and it's fantastic. More importantly, not only does the script deserve plenty of acclaim, but so does Liam Neeson, who gives an phenomenal performance. It's being theoretically "dumped" in January, even though I think it could be a huge breakout hit, but Carnahan says they might re-release it in October. ›››

New Poster for McTeigue's 'The Raven' with Updated Released Date

The Raven Poster

The only one who can stop a serial killer is the one who inspired him. Relativity has officially unveiled a new poster on EW.com for James McTeigue's The Raven, starring John Cusack as the poet Edgar Allen Poe, who, as the tagline says, helps to solve a series of murders inspired by his own stories. The release of the film was also recently pushed from early March to late April 27th, which I have to say isn't a good sign, but I'm still curious to see this. The poster features a bold red-winged design, which is quite appealing, but I don't like the other faces blended into the background. View the latest trailer here and see the poster below. ›››

Fincher's 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' Hits a Day Early, Tuesday Night

David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

She's coming. Its been officially announced (via Deadline) by Sony/Columbia Pictures that David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will now be opening in theaters a day early, starting December 20th instead of the original release of December 21st. These are essentially early midnight showings of the dark, R-rated film, as they'll start showing Dragon Tattoo at 7PM nationwide on the Tuesday evening of the 20th, an exact week from today. It's a very crowded time for movies this holiday, and this might give them a slight advantage, at least with anyone very anxious to see this (and I highly suggest it). Feel bad this holiday. ...

'The Evil Dead' Remake Gets an Official Early April 2013 Release Date

The Evil Dead

"Shut up, Linda!" Whether you want it or not, the remake of Sam Raimi's original 1981 horror classic Evil Dead is being put into production by Ghost House & Mandate Pictures and Sony & Film District, and it now has an official release date. Bloody-Disgusting reports it is now set for April 12th, 2013. So just before the summer of Star Trek 2, Iron Man 3, Fast 6, Monsters U. and Man of Steel, we'll get our new look at Diablo Cody and director Fede Alvarez's new take on Evil Dead (the logo above), without even an Ash character this time. Instead it's just a story about five friends holed up at a remote cabin who uncover a Book of the Dead. ...
